Know Thy Place

This morning walking in the soft rain in the peaceful stillness that lives only in the space before the rest of the world has awakened, I found myself contemplating the difference between acceptance and giving up.

There is a fine line that separates allowing in with a welcoming smile the reality that stands at our door, and closing the shutters against the possibility for a dream to take flight in our future.

I cannot fight the progression of this dis-ease in my body; I cannot reverse the damage done by some unknown invader. Yet, when I follow the ease that comes with acceptance, do I turn my back on the hope of little bare feet padding along our hardwood floors?

Perhaps acceptance and hope can live side by side, hand in hand. Maybe it’s about allowing the picture to blur, while still holding tight to the image that is our dreams. We must know it by name, know it by face, know it by heart–that dream, that hope, and the acceptance which allows for surprise in its fulfillment.

One of my most favorite people in the world shared this song with me today. On this gray, dreary, and rainy day I didn’t even realize how much I needed to hear its melody.

One foot in front of the other, one step closer to the illusive rainbow, each day takes me there. Step by step and breath by breath.

KNOW THY PLACE
Danny Schmidt

Know thy place, and know thy part
Know it by name, know it by face, and know it by heart
Don’t look up, cause it’s a long ways down
Step by step and breath by breath
It’s a trail of doubt

I’ve heard them tell you lies
That all that’s true’s been tried
That’s life’s been carved in ice, so hide your light
And fear your flame

Know thy place, and know thy part
Know it by name, know it by face, and know it by heart
Don’t look up, cause it’s a long ways down
Step by step and breath by breath
It’s a trail of doubt

But I’m here to tell you this
That the sky is yours to kiss
So go and lift your lips and raise your eyes
And expect surprise

And know thy place, and know thy part
Know it by name, know it by face, and know it by heart
And don’t look down, cause that’s all been seen
Step by step and breath by breath
It’s a trail of dreams
