“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are”
– Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
As you begin to track the workings of your body, you may find it helpful to have some electronic support. In our world all-consumed by technology it is pretty nearly a necessity these days.
One tool I have found to be extremely helpful, in fact I use it every day now, is a software program from Calorie King. This software will help you keep track of how many calories you should be consuming to stay at a healthy weight (or to lose a few pounds–what I’ve been using it for). It will also tell you how much protein, fat, sugar, carbohydrates, etc. you should be consuming each day–while tracking what you have consumed compared to your target.
In addition, the Calorie King software will track your exercise and tell you how many calories you have burned based on the activity you decide to partake in. I have found this feature to be extremely motivating. I know that if I go for that 30 minute run it means I can have that glass of red wine I’ve been looking forward to all week.
The software is inexpensive with a price tag of $45.00, and can be used for up to five people. One great way to utilize the software is to get your husband on board as well. Make it a joint effort–eating and exercising together (which will help his swimmers as well!).
When I began using this software I thought I was eating fairly consciously and healthy, this proved to not be quite as true as I thought. I quickly learned exactly what was in the foods I was consuming, and just how much fat and carbohydrates (far, far too much) I was eating each day. I also saw an imbalance in my protein and fiber (both were consistently below target). Focusing only on calories can mask an imbalance in the nutrients our bodies need to be healthy.
Later in this series I will highlight the foods you may want to take caution in consuming on your quest to heal the imbalances leading to fertility challenges. Using software such as the one offered by Calorie King (click on the word to access the software site) is one way to empower yourself with the wisdom you need to become the healthiest version of you.
